David Alaba scored his first goal since his summer transfer as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 to win Sunday’s Clasico at Camp Nou.

Alaba fired home a powerful left-foot drive in the first half before Lucas Vazquez made the game safe.

Substitute Sergio Aguero’s 97th-minute consolation counted for nothing as the pressure piled on manager Ronald Koeman.

The victory took Madrid temporarily back to the top of the table ahead of Real Sociedad’s evening visit to Atletico Madrid.

However, a 2-2 draw in that game meant that Real Sociedad go top by one point, although they have played an extra game than the two Madrid sides.

Luis Suarez scored twice as Atletico recovered from two goals down to get a point. Alexander Soerloth and Alexander Isak had opened up a two-goal advantage for the away side.

Second-placed Real Madrid are level on points with Sevilla, who beat Levante 5-3 in a thrilling match at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan.

Oliver Torres, Rafa Mir, Diego Carlos, Munir El Haddadi and Fernando found the net for Sevilla, while Jose Luis Morales (2) and Gonzalo Melero scored for Levante.

The other match on Sunday saw Real Betis enter the Champions League reckoning by beating Rayo Vallecano 3-2 at home. Alex Moreno, Juanmi and Willian Jose’s penalty proved the difference, with Randy Nteka and Alvaro Garcia scoring for Rayo.

Monday’s match, meanwhile, saw Celta Vigo ease to a 3-0 win over bottom side Getafe in what was an early season relegation battle. The match was scoreless at the break but Santi Mina and Iago Aspas scored in a three-minute burst before Djene Dakonam was dismissed. Santi Minao got another before Chema was sent off as Getafe finished with nine men.

Athletic Bilbao moved up the table on Saturday after a hard-fought 2-1 win at home to Villarreal.

Raul Garcia gave the hosts the lead only for Francis Coquelin to equalise just before the hour mark.

In the end, Iker Muniain would emerge as the match winner with a penalty in the 77th minute.

There were a pair of 2-2 draws earlier in the day on Saturday as Valencia and Mallorca and Elche and Espanyol shares the points in their respective matches.

In the fourth and final match of the day, Alaves earned a potentially vital win away at Cadiz.
