What are the Testing Requirements for Going on Holiday?

Travelling might be back on the cards for UK holidaymakers right now, but there are a few extra steps to complete before you leave. COVID-19 might not be deemed quite as serious as it was almost two years ago, but there’s still risk involved. Therefore many countries will have COVID-19 entry testing requirements for going on holiday along with the usual rules for crossing the border. If you are planning to get away for a much-needed break soon, read on for a COVID-19 checklist of everything you’ll need to do.

Do You Need a COVID-19 Test to Fly?

Whether or not you will need a COVID-19 test to fly will depend on a few different factors. Firstly, the country that you are travelling to may have specific entry requirements, which include all visitors having a Fit-to-Fly test before entering, even if you have had the COVID-19 vaccine. You can find out more about the entry requirements for the country that you are planning to visit at the website.

If you are not fully vaccinated, you will usually be required to take and pass a COVID-19 test wherever you travel to. Bear in mind that some countries will have certain time limits on when you need to take this. Again, you can find out where to get a COVID test for travel on the website or search for approved test providers. MyHealthcare Clinic is an approved provider offering a range of COVID-19 tests for travel. You can get a COVID test before travelling here, or book your private test for returning.

Do You Need a COVID-19 Test to Return to the UK?

The rules on getting a COVID-19 test before travelling back to the UK have changed, with fully vaccinated passengers no longer required to show proof of a negative test before returning home. However, you will still need to fill out a passenger locater form for your return to the UK, which can be done online no more than 48 hours before your return. If you have not had both doses of the vaccine, you will need to take a test before you will be able to return to the UK. You can purchase lateral flow tests to take with you, or get a test in the country that you are visiting.

Which COVID-19 Test Do I Need When I Return?

Currently, vaccinated passengers need to take one test on day two of their return from a country that is on the new ‘go’ list. Right now, this is a PCR test, but this is planned to change soon to a cheaper lateral flow test. However, unvaccinated passengers will need to take at least two tests upon returning to the UK. This includes a PCR test on day two and also on day eight. Without a full vaccination record, you will also be required to quarantine for ten days after returning. This can be shortened by taking a negative ‘test to release’ test on day five.
